Paint the Town Red dropped August 4, 2023, through Kemosabe and RCA as the lead single from Scarlet. It debuted at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 (issue dated August 19), climbed to #5 two weeks later, and crowned the chart at #1 on the September 16, 2023 issue — Doja Cat's first solo US #1 and her second overall after "Say So." It was the first rap song to top the Hot 100 since Nicki Minaj's "Super Freaky Girl" in 2022. According to Wikipedia, the audio soundtracked over 618,000 TikTok videos during its rise — the surge in TikTok use directly preceded its Hot 100 ascent. The song also topped both Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs for three weeks each and won Doja the Radio Songs chart for the first time in her career.
Cultural Note
The track's hook is built on a sample of Dionne Warwick's 1964 Hot 100 #6 hit "Walk On By," written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. That credit gave Bacharach and David their first Hot 100 #1 since Twista's "Slow Jamz" in 2004 — and put Warwick's voice atop the chart for the first time since "That's What Friends Are For" in 1986. Warwick told Kelly Clarkson she only learned about it from her granddaughter ("Doja who?") and said she was "thrilled." The Nina McNeely-directed music video — released the same day as the single — leans devil-coded with red contact lenses, eyeball-plucking imagery, and Doja riding a green creature; she pushed back on a satanism reading in a December 2023 Ebro Darden interview ("Because I'm fucking wearing red. Me wearing red is a crime"). The visual was based on three paintings Doja designed herself.
The song's groove is laid-back at 100 BPM — relaxed posture and a slight head tilt photograph better than tense, upright shots; the AI matches the slow swagger of the track to body openness in the input
Strong red styling (lipstick, dress, jacket, background accents) ties the output visually to the song's identity — the music video is monochromatic red for a reason
The track's TikTok footprint is lip-sync first, choreography second — a photo with clear lips and full facial visibility renders the "I paint the town red" hook line more convincingly than a profile or partially-obscured shot
