Choreographer: Michael Jackson with Vincent Paterson and Jeffrey Daniel
Smooth Criminal sold 5 million copies, and the music video — directed by Colin Chilvers — won every video award it was eligible for in 1989. The lean became the most-imitated single dance move of the 80s, and the technique was even patented (US Patent 5,255,452): Jackson and his collaborators developed a special shoe with a heel slot that anchored to a peg on the stage, allowing the otherwise impossible angle.
Cultural Note
The 45-degree lean was an in-camera trick in the music video and a mechanical effect in live performances. The patented shoe, filed in 1992, had a slot in the heel that hooked onto a peg on the stage floor, giving Jackson a fixed pivot point so the lean could go further than gravity should allow. Without the shoe, the lean is a 30-second forward pitch — try it without one and you fall.
Side-profile photos can produce stunning lean output, though front-facing also works.
Photos with both arms outstretched (suit jacket open) produce the most authentic Smooth Criminal silhouette.
Solid-color backgrounds (single dark tone) help the AI render the lean illusion without background distortion.
